Afghan security forces have retaken control of Mahmai district of northeastern Badakhshan Province week after the Taliban fighters overran the district, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) reported on Sunday.
Afghan security forces launched an extensive operation in response to the Taliban fighters’ attacks on Mahmai district and cleared the district of the insurgents, the MoD added.
The ministry claimed that Afghan forces inflicted heavy losses on the Taliban and seized and destroyed a large amount of weapons and ammunition during the operation.
Local officials in Badakhshan said last week that the Taliban fighters overran Mahmai district and inflicted heavy casualties on Afghan forces.
