Speaking at the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies in Doha, Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, said that any peace agreement must be approved by Loya Jirga (Consultative Assembly) and the Afghan parliament.

He spoke about the importance of peace for Afghanistan, but asserted that any peace deal must have approval of both parliament and Loya Jirga.

Ghani said: Any peace deal must be approved by Loya Jirga and the Afghan parliament. This is the case that underpins popular discourse.

Ghani added that the consultative peace Jirga has specified the qualifications of the negotiators and that the team has a unified approach.

“The desired goal that we pursue is an independent, united and democratic Afghanistan that is at peace with itself and the world and is capable to protect achievements of the past two decades, “he further added.

However, despite Khalilzad’s visit to Qatar, the delegations of Afghanistan and the Taliban have not held any meetings over the past eight days and the process has completely been paused.

Elsewhere, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, is on a tour to the region to strengthen regional consensus regarding the Afghan peace process. Abdullah Abdullah has discussed the Afghan peace process with national advisor of India.

Spokesman for the HCNR, Faridoon Khwazoon told reporters that “strengthening regional consensus is important for the Afghan peace process. India plays a key role in this process and we hope it supports it as well.”

Despite the ongoing efforts, everyone is waiting for resolution of controversial issues between delegates of the Afghan government and the Taliban so that the ground is paved for official intra-Afghan talks.
