NATO Civilian Envoy Nicolas Kay has said that the release of Taliban inmates from prison belongs to the Afghan government which could be resolved through negotiations.
“The peace process and intra-Afghan negotiation is a need. These negotiations belong to the Afghans and will be led by Afghans as well. The question concerning the release of prisoners also belongs to the Afghan government. This is an intra-Afghan issue and NATO has nothing to do with it,” he told VOA in an exclusive interview.
In regard to the US airstrike on the Taliban, the NATO envoy also said that the attack was carried out in the defense of Afghan security forces and that the Taliban must halt their attacks in order to start the intra-Afghan talks.
He later added that ” NATO is waiting for a peace agreement between Afghans and the agreement must take the achievements of the past 19 years, human rights, women’s rights and democratic principles into consideration.
