Incoming US NSA supports current Afghan diplomacy
04 Jan 2021
President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee for national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, has voiced support for the existing Afghan diplomacy concerning peace.
“The United States, under President Joe Biden, will support diplomacy along these lines, even as it ensures through America’s national security strategy that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists to attack the United States, “he said.
In an interview with CNN, Sallivan, added that “there is currently a US Taliban agreement and it imposes some obligations on the United States and it imposes some obligations on the Taliban.” He urged the Taliban to cut ties with Al-Qaeda, not just in word but in deed, reduce violence, and participate in good-faith negotiations with the Afghan government.
This comes as the Afghan government has frequently accused the Taliban of cooperating with other terrorist groups.
Head of the National Directorate of Security told a session of the lower house of parliament on Monday that the Taliban still maintained ties with Al-Qaeda.
“The Taliban have not complied with the majority of these conditions mentioned in the US-Taliban agreement, the group’s attacks are taking place in cities. The Taliban’s relationship with foreign terrorist groups is also regular and deep,” he stated.
The Taliban has not yet commented on the report.
