Khalilzad begins trip to discuss Afghanistan peace
22 Oct 2019
The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has begun new multi-nation trip on Afghanistan peace, US State Department said in a released statement on 20 October.
Khalilzad and an interagency team departed on travel to Brussels, Paris, and Moscow on October 20, the statement added.
In Brussels and Paris, Ambassador Khalilzad will meet with likeminded partners including the EU, NATO, and UN to review how best to support accelerated efforts to reach peace in Afghanistan.
In Moscow, Ambassador Khalilzad will meet with Russian and Chinese counterparts to discuss shared interests in seeing the war in Afghanistan come to an end.
Earlier, Moscow reported that representatives of China, USA, Pakistan and Russia are scheduled to hold talks on Afghanistan in Beijing.
Khalilzad has held nine round of talks with Taliban representatives, but the meetings were cancelled following Trump’s tweet after a car bombing in Kabul that killed 11 civilians including a US soldier.
