Killing of innocent people makes it difficult to achieve peace – Abdullah
17 Feb 2021
Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) said Wednesday that target assassinations of media and human rights activists do not bring any group to power, and that the only solution to the current problems is negotiations.
Addressing a meeting of the council’s human rights commission, Abdullah Abdullah, said that continued killing of innocent people by the Taliban would make the path to peace more difficult.
“If the Taliban think the group demonstrates its capabilities by killing innocent people and human rights activists, this is a miscalculation and makes it difficult to reach peace peacefully, adding that Targeting innocent people is forbidden from every perspective, “he asserted.
In an address to the Taliban, he stated: “The Taliban must understand that the way to peace is through dialogue, not the battlefield, bloodshed and terror.”
The Taliban have frequently denied involvement in recent bombings and targeted killings in the country.
However, chairman of the HCNR says peace talks are at a critical juncture.
Regarding the establishment of the human rights commission of the HCNR, he said: “This commission, in coordination with other institutions, can work seriously and continuously to reflect the demands of the citizens of Afghanistan and human rights institutions.”
Abdullah stressed that human rights are violated due to ongoing war and that defending human rights values is one of the council’s priorities in peace talks.
