Local officials in eastern Nangarhar Province say more than 60 IS fighters who are foreign nationals have surrendered to Afghan National Directorate of Security forces in Achin district, a traditional IS stronghold.

According to reports, hundreds of IS militants have laid down their arms and surrendered to Afghan forces after Afghan army launched a massive operation in parts of the eastern province.

Earlier, 600 IS militants surrendered to Afghan Commando forces with their families in Nangarhar Province.

This comes as Afghan government said two weeks ago that the Islamic State’s ‘backbone was broken’ in Afghanistan.
