NATO to continue training mission in Afghanistan
02 Dec 2020
NATO has adjusted its presence in Afghanistan based on the situation in this country, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters after the end of the first day of the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO in Brussels.
“NATO supports the Afghan peace process, and as part of that we have adjusted our presence. While United States has decided to further reduce its troop number to 2,500, NATO’s training mission continues,” he added.
He also said that the organization will make a hard decision about its military presence in Afghanistan next year. “We have to take some hard decisions when NATO’s defense ministers meet next February. Whatever we decide, we must do it in coordinated and orderly way,” he stated.
Elsewhere, he called on the Taliban to reduce violence at the first step that a ceasefire must be part of it.
The Taliban have not yet commented on NATO chief’s remarks.
