The provincial council of northern Balkh province has voiced serious concerns over an increase in the number of illicit drug users in the province.
Head of Balkh Provincial Council Afzal Hadid accuses some police officers of distributing drugs in the province.
” The rise in the number of drug addicts in Mazar-e-Sharif City has disturbed public order,” Hadid added.
However, rejecting these claims, provincial police spokesman Adel Shah Adel says that according to statistics, more than 100,000 people including women and children are addicted to drugs in Balkh.
In the meantime, director of the centre for treatment of drug addicts in Balkh Dawood Rateb has said that so far more than three thousand drug addicts have been treated in seven health centres in Balkh.
Elsewhere, director of child protection unit of Balkh Department of Labour and Social Affairs says that they are making efforts to provide vocational trainings for drug addicts after their treatment.
