France has asked the Afghan government not to free those Taliban fighters who are convicted of killing French citizens and soldiers in Afghanistan, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“France is particularly concerned by the presence, among the individuals liable to be released, of several terrorists convicted of killing French citizens in Afghanistan. It firmly opposes the liberation of individuals convicted of crimes against French nationals, in particular soldiers and humanitarian workers,” the statement said.

The statement further added that the French government has asked the Afghan authorities not to proceed with the release of these terrorists.

The Afghan government after convening the Consultative Loya Jirga (Grand Council) has agreed to release 400 prisoners of the Taliban as part of moves towards peace talks with the Taliban militants, and so far has released 80 of these convicts.
