A police officer was assassinated by unknown armed men in Dehdadi district of northern Balkh Province, local security officials said.

The incident occurred Friday night as Zelgai, the policeman, was on way to home, police said.

Dehdadi district chief, Sayyed Mustafa, said Zelgai was shot dead by two individuals riding a motorcycle.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
