Russia and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have voiced their support for Afghanistan’s peace efforts.
In a meeting with Afghan Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on the sideline of the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of Heads of Government Summit in Uzbekistan, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said peace in Afghanistan was to the benefit of the region.
Mr Medvedev has voiced concerns over activities of IS-K in Afghanistan and described it as a serious threat to the region.
” More than 10,000 IS fighters have been relocated to the north and northeastern parts of Afghanistan that pose serious threats to the Central Asian countries,” he said.
Medvedev further added that Moscow and the SCO support the Afghan government’s efforts regarding peace.
Earlier, Russia hosted a meeting on Afghanistan peace with officials from Afghanistan, The United States, some regional countries and Taliban representatives in attendance.
According to a statement released by the CEO office, Abdulla Abdullah reiterated that peace won’t be brought to Afghanistan unless Kabul’s international partners including Russia help support the process.
Security threats in the region, fighting extremist groups, regional challenges, economic cooperation and joint investments are on agenda of the SCO meeting in Uzbekistan.
