Taliban rejects president Ghani’s call for ceasefire
25 Apr 2020
Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a message on the occasion of the fasting month of Ramadan has called on the Taliban to agree on peace and ceasefire.
Ghani said: “Given the further outbreak of the coronavirus, the Taliban must respond positively to the call of the government and people of Afghanistan for peace.”
However, Taliban Political Spokesman Suhail Shaheen said that the demand for a ceasefire was not rational as the Afghan government has put the lives of thousands of prisoners in danger of the COVID-19 and hindered the peace and implementation of the Doha agreement.
He added the Taliban rejected Afghan government’s call for a ceasefire.
In the meantime, Afghanistan’s National Security Council reported to have released 58 Taliban prisoners as part of the government’s peace efforts.
