UN envoy meets Taliban chief negotiator in Doha

The United Nations Special Envoy for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons has met with the Taliban’s chief negotiator Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in Doha, the capital of the State of Qatar.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced on Sunday that in her meeting with the deputy political chief of the Taliban, Mrs. Deborah had stressed the need to launch a comprehensive and fair intra-Afghan talks so that all Afghans including women, youths and minorities could participate.
In the meantime, Spokesman for Taliban’s Political Bureau in Qatar Suhail Shaheen said on his twitter that Mullah Baradar and the UN envoy had discussed the launching of intra-Afghan negotiations, releasing of the remaining prisoners, preventing civilian casualties during conflicts as well as fighting against the COVID-19.
Elsewhere, the Taliban has recently released 14 Afghan government detainees in Logar, Nangarhar and Nuristan provinces.
Based on the Doha agreement, releasing 6,000 prisoners from both sides of the conflict is the main condition for the launch of intra-Afghan talks.
