US committed to enduring partnership with Kabul – Khalilzad
08 Jan 2021
The US special envoy for Afghanistan peace, Zalmay Khalilzad, said Friday his country was committed to enduring cooperation with Kabul on countering terrorism and promoting regional peace and stability
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that in a VTC with Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Mr. Khalilzad stressed that Washington also supports the Afghan peace process.
Earlier, during his Kabul visit, the US peace envoy met with current and former officials and political figures to discuss the peace process, however, there has been no report about his meeting with President Ghani.
Khalilzad’s recent remarks come as there are rumors that Khalilzad has come to Kabul this time with a message of an interim government.
In the meantime, with the beginning of the the second round of peace talks in the Qatari capital Doha, a number of lawmakers see the process as complicated and warn that negotiations concurrent with violence is not acceptable.
They urge the negotiating parties to give up their demands and prioritize the ceasefire, which is the will of the people of Afghanistan. The government’s ministry for peace, however, says that ceasefire is on the agenda of the Afghan team in Doha.
The peace delegations of the Afghan government and the Taliban are set to begin discussions on a definite agenda recently set by the committees of the two sides.
