US House speaker, Pentagon chief make unexpected visit to Afghanistan
21 Oct 2019
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other senior members of Congress and US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper have made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Sunday (October 20).
Pelosi and Esper have held separate talks with Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani at the presidential palace.
It was Esper’s first trip to Afghanistan since taking over as Pentagon chief in July. Esper also visited some of the 14,000 U.S. troops still in Afghanistan.
“The aim is to still get a peace agreement at some point, that’s the best way forward,” Esper said according to US media.
