US, Pakistan agree to continue cooperation on Afghanistan reconciliation

US and Pakistani officials have agreed to continue their cooperation for Afghan peace and reconciliation, according to a statement published by Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

The agreement was reached between US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, South and Central Asia, Alice G. Wells and senior officials of Pakistani foreign ministry.

“This understanding was reached during a meeting between US and Pakistani delegations at the Foreign Office in which the two sides deliberated on efforts for peace in Afghanistan”, the statement added.

“The two sides reviewed recent developments regarding the Afghan peace process. It was underlined that this was a historic opportunity to end the prolonged Afghan conflict for which all Afghan stakeholders, as well as Afghanistan’s neighbors, had an important role to play”, the FO statement further added.

The Pakistani delegation during the talks reiterated the country’s support for intra-Afghan dialogue. They also highlighted the need for creating a conducive environment in Afghanistan for early and dignified return of Afghan refugees to their homeland, the FO said.

US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Peace Zalmay Khalilzad is scheduled to meet India and Qatar after Pakistan visit.
