US Special Peace Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad traveled to Qatar on September 4, the US State Department said in a statement.

The Afghan people are ready for a sustainable reduction in violence and a political settlement that will end the war, the statement added.

The statement further added that “Afghan leaders must seize this historic opportunity for peace.  All sides have taken important steps to remove obstacles for the start of IAN.  Now is the time to start.”

Based on the US-Taliban agreement signed on February 29 last year in Doha , the intra-Afghan negotiations should have been held after completion of the prisoners exchange process, but the exact time for convening the talks has not been specified as of yet.
