US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Peace Zalmay Khalilzad has met with Afghan government officials and High Peace Council (HPC) delegation in Kabul.

Mr Khalilzad arrived in Kabul yesterday evening (31 March) three weeks after the conclusion of talks between the US and Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar.

Khalilzad met with Afghan Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdullah Abdullah and HPC secretary Mohammad Omar Daudzai. He wrote on his Twitter account that he met with Afghan officials to discuss the need to promote intra-Afghan dialogues.

” When the two sides sit together and hold discussions and agree on all issues during the talks- taken from the first step to the end, to ensure sustainable peace, is a different step, but formation of an interim government is not to benefit the people of Afghanistan”, Abdullah was quoted as saying at a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

However, the CEO says, the future system and ways to involve the Taliban in the system will be discussed during the face-to-face negotiations with the Taliban.

Qatar will host a joint meeting of Afghan politicians and Taliban representatives within the next two weeks.

The fifth round of talks between the Taliban and US representatives lasted for 16 days in Qatar, and according to initial leaked reports, the two sides only agreed on two key issues including the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and effective counterterrorism measures.
