US, Russia, China acknowledge Pakistan’s role in Afghan peace process

The quadrilateral meeting of China, Russia, USA and Pakistan was held in Beijing on Friday (12 July).
In an issued statement, the US State Department said that the United States, China and Russia had jointly welcomed Pakistan to a four-party consultation process that seeks to end the 18-year-old war and decades of blood-letting in Afghanistan.
“China, Russia and the United States welcomed Pakistan joining the consultation and believe that Pakistan can play an important role in facilitating peace in Afghanistan,” said the.
According to the statement, representatives of the four countries have also called for direct start of negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Meanwhile, US Peace Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad wrote on his Twitter page that the four countries have agreed on beginning of talks between Afghans, reducing the level of violence and announcing a ceasefire.
Zalmay Khalilzad and representatives of Russia, China and Pakistan attended the meeting.
