Upon delivery of a consignment of 1,000 oxygen balloon, Uzbekistan government officials said that Tashkent would continue to provide aid to Afghanistan to better combat the COVID-19.

The aid was handed over by Uzbek officials to local officials in Balkh province on Friday afternoon.

Ismatullah Irgashov, the Uzbek government’s special representative for Afghanistan, said his country would continue to provide assistance to address the shortage of oxygen at hospitals.

He added that twenty doctors from Afghanistan are being provided trainings on how to treat the Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile, local officials in Balkh say the oxygen shipment provided by Uzbekistan will help address the existing challenges in terms of shortages of oxygen for Covid-19 patients.

Balkh Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi said: “At a time when oxygen shortages at hospitals are being seriously felt, these aids are a promise for the people of the country.”

He said he would soon set up an oxygen plant in Mazar-e-Sharif in cooperation with the government of Uzbekistan.

The shipment of 1,000 oxygen balloons has been allocated to Covid-19 hospitals in the northern provinces.

Gul Ahmad Ayoubi, head of the Balkh Public Health Department, said that 500 of these balloons had been allocated to Balkh Hospital.

Efforts will be made to distribute oxygen balloons to those patients who are in dire need of it.

Uzbekistan is the first country to send oxygen balloons to Afghanistan during the Covid-19 crisis; Last year, Tashkent sent an aid shipment of food and medicine to Afghanistan to fight the coronavirus.
