20 Nov 2019
Quoting some US officials in Afghanistan, New York Times reported that the two Western professors held captive by the Taliban had been released on Tuesday and handed over to American forces in Nawbahar district of western Zabul Province.
In a statement, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he welcomed the Afghan government and the Taliban’s decision to exchange prisoners.
“The Taliban have indicated that the release of the two professors is intended as a goodwill gesture, which the United States welcomes,” Pompeo said.
Elsewhere, Taliban political spokesman Suhail Shaheen has confirmed that the three Taliban prisoners have arrived in Qatar.
