Afghan official blames politicians for hindering peace
07 Nov 2019
Afghan President’s Public Relations and Strategic Affairs Adviser Wahid Omar says the government’s efforts to make peace talks conditional is aimed at preventing any covert deals regarding peace.
Peace in Afghanistan has become an ambiguous and complicated process which is hindered internally and externally. The process lacks parallel perspectives among political parties and the Afghan government. It has also been a matter of rivalry among regional and global countries.
Afghan politicians and opposition groups have frequently accused the presidential palace of being the main obstacle towards the process, adding the government is seeking to monopolize the process.
But Wahid Omar has recently said that the government is not deterring the process.
” It is a misunderstanding that some say the government is hindering the peace process. We are not an obstacle against the process. Peace is our focal point. We are preventing a covert deal. The government is not seeking to dominate the peace process, but it wants unity, and integrity among Afghans in the peace talks,” he was quoted as saying.
The president’s adviser has also said if the Taliban really want to bring peace to Afghanistan, they should show willingness to a ceasefire.
” The Taliban’s intention is important. The group should make a ceasefire and demonstrate whether it is independent or not? If there were no preconditions by the government, there was no negotiation. We undoubtedly want to negotiate. It is also a good opportunity for the young generation to sit on the negotiating table with the Taliban,” he went on saying.
Wahid Omar has also called on the Afghan politicians to put aside their differences and support the government’s position towards the peace process. ” There is no satisfaction among our politicians,” he further added.
