Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a meeting with the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, in Tehran, urged that the “Iraqi government should take actions so that US troops will leave Iraq as soon as possible.”

Khamenei reportedly added that the relations between the two countries are beyond simple ties between two neighboring countries and that the prosperity and progress of the two countries are linked.

Some 5,200 troops are stationed in Iraq as part of a security agreement with the Iraqi government to advise, assist and support the country’s troops in the fight against the Islamic State.
